Description

Complete editions of individual composers’ works have been around since the 1850s. Malcolm Gillies considers how this particularly Germanic artefact of western music, originally intended for musicologists and performers, is shaping up in the twenty-first century: what are its defining characteristics now in critical approach, score presentation, spin-off products, and business models? As digital and new printing technologies evolve, in what formats should critical editions, and associated Urtext scores, be made available? Gillies uses the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition, which issued its first volumes in 2016, as a case study of the issues confronting critical editions today.

This series of colloquia perpetuates the legacy and cultural impact of Melburnian music patron and publisher Louise Hanson-Dyer (1884-1962), founder of Éditions de l’Oiseau-Lyre, by bringing cutting-edge issues in music research to a public forum for discussion and debate. It presents lectures by renowned scholars working in diverse fields of music research, including historical musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, performance studies, and composition.
